Baby is going to be freaked out when they first arrive, don’t be concerned if they don’t eat. Just offer plenty of reassurance and love. Make sure there is water available.
Feeding
I don’t feed set amounts, I look at puppy if it’s fat feed less…if it’s thin feed more. (But saying that currently they are getting ⅓ cup per meal)
Just a quick reminder, Don’t feed cows milk, dogs are lactose intolerant and it will give them dreadful sore tummies.
Breakfast 8:30am (ish)
- Biscuits – approx ¼ cup
- Fresh water
Dinner 7 pm (ish)
This is where it gets entertaining
- Biscuits (a small handful)
- Plus 1 or more of the following:
Supper 10:00
I only do supper if pup hasn’t eaten well during the day
- Sachet or a small handful of biscuits.
Just remember that 70% of the daily total needs to be biscuits and you’ll be golden.
Mind you, saying that the occasional binge of chicken necks or leftovers is great. The more variety you can get in your pups food the less picky they will be.
They love goats milk or pet milk as a treat, normal cows milk will give them a nasty upset tummy. I freeze ice cubes of UHT goats milk and either give frozen as a toy, or defrost as a drink, or add to biscuits.
Treats
Basically anything except for rawhide, cooked bones, or chocolate.
Their favourite treats at the moment are raw cauliflower, dried chicken tenders, boiled sausages and anything they can pinch from the big dogs bowls.
Just a note
Our adult Havanese are on 2 meals a day. ⅓ cup of biscuits twice a day plus treats, veggies etc.
If they have a busy day I’ll up this amount to ½ of a cup.
You’ll soon work out your babies individual requirements, these will change as they grow. Just understand that your baby is growing and the less stress you put on their joints the better, so when they are young it’s recommended you keep them a little skinny.
Oh, and fresh water needs to be available at all times.
